John Fox is a prolific artist, print-maker, poet, designer, writer, and also artistic director of Welfare State International, one of Britain's leading arts companies. Welfare State made their name in the 70s and 80s, with groundbreaking events such as Raising the Titanic in a London dock and King Lear on a Japanese ski slope. One of the few surviving theatre companies of that era, they have now created Lanternhouse, an award-winning building in Cumbria, where they devise celebratory projects that involve the whole community.
Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs and original drawings from the artist's sketchbook, this vivid account brings to life the company's working practices over the last thirty years. With chapters on devising site-specific events, lantern parades, alternative naming, and funeral ceremonies, this book is an inspiration for anyone interested in contemporary performance, art, rites of passage, or theatre.
