This impressive volume was published to coincide with the centenary of the Zulu War in 1979. At the time it was not a commercial success and copies were being remaindered by the early 1980's . However, within a few years and the growth of interest in the Zulu War it became scarce and much in demand. Most of the numerous colour illustrations in the work are from a set of contemporary coloured lantern slides.

The remarkable, good quality black and white photographs will be of particular interest to collectors, as they include Durnford's First Regiment standing in formation, Warriors of Major Bengough's 2nd Battalion of the Natal Native Contingent, scenes after the battles of Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift, the site of the British bivouac the night before the Battle of Ulundi, etc...eerily bringing to life these tragic but pivotal moments in our country's history.
